Different Cultural Outlooks On Losing One's VirginityHas Virginity become an obsolete concept in the modern
world? It seems so. Young women, in Western societies, are experimenting with their sexuality while
their male counterparts are doing the same. Socialogical studies show this actually results in a healthier,
more well-adjusted sexual identity later in life.
However, the concept of keeping one's virginity has not disappeared from much of the planet - far from it. Many cultures, with pouplations in the billions, are still upholding the value of virginity or pre-marital chastity, mainly on the basis of predominant religious concepts. One obvious advocate of virginity is the
Catholic Church. The Church uses as validation for this stand, the teaching that,
"All young girls are the Virgin Mary's daughters." Since Catholics view
Mary as the most pristine and chaste of all women, young Catholic girls are
therefore forced to follow her lead throughout their lives...
Of course, sex is not prohibited once the woman has entered into the sacrament of marriage. However, while married women are to be treated with respect and approval, women who remain virgins all their lives are considered as consecrated or saintly. Thus, Virgins achieves a higher status in the Catholic community, than those woimen who are married and certasinly much "higher" than women who have pre-marital sex! Aside from iconic use of the Virgin Mary, the Catholic Church has also employed countless other symbolic moments and people, in order to justify the importance of virginity. Canonizing St. Maria Goretti, who died from viscious knife wounds received while fending off a rapist, presents such a symbolism. The Catholic Church, in ancient times, did
impose cruel punishments on women who become unchaste out of wedlock. Thankfully, contemporary
Christian ideologies have diminished such harmful practices. However, while
Catholic girls may be spared such pain and humiliation, young women from other
cultures have to contend with much graver consequences.
One such cultural harshness is present in Hindu countries. Chastity is a crucial virtue for all Hindu women, before they get married, and also after a marriage is terminated, usually upon the husband's death. This means that if the husband dies before the wife, the widow, who is no longer a virgin, is not suited to wed someone else! Furthermore, her existence is considered not only superfluous, but abhorrent as well. Thus, the ancient furneral practice called Sati was performed upon the death of a husband. Sati is a custom which states that during the husband's cremation, the wife shall fling herself into the flames of her husbands funeral pyre. In so doing, she cements her faith and honor as a wife. Ouch! A modified version of such practice is called the Jauhar or Jouhar. This custom was performed on a larger scale, likewise prescribing that the wives kill themselves, but this time, with their husband's imminent death in mind. Usually this occured during wartimes, when imminent defeat was at hand. This kept the women from being dishonored by the enemy. These heinous practices are now outlawed in India,
and thus rarely occur. Some fundamentalists press for a reversion to these traditions. Few,if
any, of these advocates for a return of the practice of Sati are women... Nevertheless, premarital
chastity is still a highly treasured virtue in Hinduism
today.
The same statement holds true for Islamic cultures where women are expected to be virgins until they are married. Muslim brides must remain chaste until the night of their wedding. According to Islamic teachings, Allah created the hymen because it serves the function of determining the validity of intercourse, in which women may only engage in after marriage. The hymen is present on the woman's body to make it clear to women, that sexual relations outside the marriage bond are perversions of a holy act and are considered unclean. Islam prizes the body's cleanliness above most things, and should, thus, be protected and upheld. It is interesting to note that the number of cosmetic surgeries performed to reintact or resew the hymen has been increasing among Muslim women who reside in Western countries. Another point of interest is that the preservation of men's virginity seems to have been neglected in the cultural taboos of these religions. Unlike the modern Western culture, there are several cultures that
maintain the importance of virginity before marriage. Still no matter where you live, waiting until
one has reached a certain level
of maturity to lose one's virginity is a wise course. One does change after that first intercourse...
However, the
decision of whether or not virginity is important depends essentially on
personal choice. After all, a woman or a man must be free to choose, without fear or
coercion, what she/he can or cannot do with her/his own body.
